The voyage takes Nick and Cook\u2019s sundry crew of sailors and scientists to then-uncharted \u201cAustralis,\u201d stopping en route at the Canary Islands, the Equator\u2014where crew members not having crossed before were \u201cthrice dunked\u201d in the sea\u2014and Rio de Janeiro, as the Northern Hemisphere\u2019s summer morphs to the Southern\u2019s snowy winter. Further southwest, Nick is the first to spy New Zealand, where the ship is immediately beset by a rain of spears from the local Maori.
